The Lenten season is a time of fasting and praying to draw closer to God. It is also a time to examine our ways and reflect on how we can grow in righteousness, according to God’s word and His will. Self-examination or soul searching is not easy and maybe painful; it requires courage. We must see ourselves realistically, honestly, and humbly about God’s righteousness and the holiness He requires of us. Then we need to repent, turn back to God, and pray earnestly for His help to change our ways and say no to things we’re doing or saying that do not glorify Him. We need to recognize that, because of our human frailty and weakness, we cannot change on our own. We must rely on God’s Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, to empower us to lead transformed lives.
During this Lenten season, let’s take time to do some soul searching. Examining our ways and then taking action will help us grow in Christian maturity and our relationship with God and others.
Merciful and gracious Father, please forgive our contrary and willful ways. Give us the courage to honestly, humbly and realistically examine our behavior, habits and actions. Lord, help us to turn back to You and repent of those things that are sinful and do not glorify Your name. Order our steps and empower us through Your Holy Spirit to change and live transformed lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
