Christians around the world spend 40 days of the Lenten Season in fasting and prayer. By doing so, we honor the sacrifice that Jesus made by abstaining from certain activities and habits of our own, things that draw us away from Him. In that time, we are also preparing ourselves for a momentous event.
At the end of the 40 days, we mourn His death. But that is not the momentous event. It is Jesus’s return three days later that we truly preparing for.
Throughout the Bible, we see such preparation. Moses prepared himself to deliver the Ten Commandments. John the Baptist prepared for Jesus. And, Jesus, himself, fasted in the preparation of fulfilling His Ministry.
Prepare. Our Messiah will return again. Scripture tells us that we will not know the hour or day. So, let us use our time wisely. Let’s make space for Jesus every day. Let’s continue to turn away from those types of behaviors that we know are not pleasing to Him. So when He returns, we are spiritually ready. It’s not always easy to let go of certain behaviors. But if we ask for God’s help, He gives us the ability to do all things, through Christ, who strengthens us. Make space for Jesus.
Heavenly Father, we want to be pleasing in your sight. We are virtually bombarded with hundreds of things every day that draw us away from you. Give us the strength to say no. Help us to stay connected to you and enthralled by you. Help us to live according to you Word. Help us to be found blameless when your Son returns to claim your Kingdom. Strengthen us Lord. This we pray, in Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.
